GBMD: Dear March, Come In!

Primrose 'Cottage Cream' - in flower since July last year

Dear March, come in!
How glad I am!
I looked for you before.
Put down your hat–
You must have walked–
How out of breath you are!
Dear March, how are you?
And the rest?
Did you leave Nature well?
Oh, March, come right upstairs with me,
I have so much to tell!

I got your letter, and the birds’;
The maples never knew
That you were coming,–I declare,
How red their faces grew!
But, March, forgive me–
And all those hills
You left for me to hue;
There was no purple suitable,
You took it all with you.

Who knocks? That April!
Lock the door!
I will not be pursued!
He stayed away a year, to call
When I am occupied.
But trifles look so trivial
As soon as you have come,
That blame is just as dear as praise
And praise as mere as blame.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

  1. One of my favorite poems for early spring, VP! Love your primroses--mine go dormant during the winter, but I'm looking forward to seeing their bright cheery faces again very soon.

  4. Great poem! Thanks for sharing. That species of primrose goes dormant here too in the summer. Awesome to have it bloom for so long.

  5. Oh, don't say that about primroses! I've got some which I bought from Homebase, which have been in full flower non-stop for six weeks. (Fantastic value for £3 a tray.) What am I going to do with them if they keep flowering through the summer?
Ooh, I know, give them to my neighbour.

  6. Well! Just goes to show we both have good taste! I once showed up to a formal banquet in which I was to be honored and my girlfriend and I had on the same dress. She said I'll bet I know how much you paid for that dress and I said bet you don't. $200 says she. Try $50 , final sale at Bonwits. That fixed her :-)

    Thanks for joining GBMD.

  7. I like the way that 'out of breath' impatient March arrives - no doubt glad to see the back if February :) That primrose is certainly what might be called a good doer!

  8. Rose - good to see you!

Petoskystone - I really must write about soil amendment for YAWA

Plantaliscious - yes, from last July!

Joan - I'm sure mine is blooming when it shouldn't. Most primroses are dormant through the summer and only flower in the late winter/early spring

Victoria - I'm pretty sure you'll be OK and they'll go dormant for you at the right time

Carolyn - great minds think alike!

Anna - March is my favourite month, but I'm biased 'cos it's my birthday and wedding anniversary month!
