ABC Wednesday – F is for…

… Food Miles at the Farm Shop

A couple of weeks ago I went with Judith and her MIL to the local Farm Shop. It’s within walking distance from our house, but NAH and I had boycotted it a few years back following an argument with the owner over some bad tasting apples. Now the shop’s been taken over by the son and his wife who’ve bought plenty of positive changes to the place.

The choice has grown immensely – local vegetables, including organic ones supplied by a local farm that also does an organic box scheme. A deli to die for, lots of treats, a choice of delicious oils and vinegars to put into refillable bottles – I could go on for a whole lot longer. My eye was drawn to the eggs counter, where it showed the food miles involved in bringing them to the shop. A great way to gently persuade everyone to shop locally.

ABC Wednesday is bought to you courtesy of Mrs Nesbitt's Place.

  1. I like the subtle suggestion to shop locally!

  2. That's a great idea!

Our nearest farm shop is a drive away, just over the border into SUffolk. It's lovely though. THey've extended it over the last year and added a cafe, where most of the food is locally sourced.

You do have to be careful in farm shops though, and checkthe origins. I looked at some tomatoes there, thinking maybe they have a big greenhouse, only to spot they came from Spain. LOL!

Never mind. If I remember to stick to the seasonal stuff....d'oh! I'm still learning!

OOo I just thought- you could have done F for Free range eggs, too!

  3. An environmentally friendly F! :)

  7. Greener living is a great goal, VP. I buy most of my eggs from a local farm, laid five minutes away! But I admit I also purchase oranges that grow 24 hours away in Florida. Hmmm. We've gotten used to produce from all over the world, haven't we?

  13. The food around would have a lot more miles on it.

  14. Locally grown produce is the freshest. What a blessing to have available to you.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ok now I've seen everything letting you know how many miles those eggs traveled to get to you fresh...
I had the same idea for F this week.
    Have a wonderful week...

  16. What better choice than food from a farm shot!!

  17. Food... a great F in my book!

  18. Farmstands and Farmer's Markets are fabulous ways to feed the family and support locals and your FOTO was fun!

  19. Food, that's an essential. Here, in the States, we don't see many cartoons of half dozen eggs; mainly dozen or dozen & a half.

  20. That's so nice! And those eggs would taste much nicer than the anaemic supermarket variety. I'd love to have a local Farm Shop.

  21. Wow....Great F post! Very neat to see how "far" they traveled!

  22. I try to use the local farm shops around here in the summer. We also have a farmer's market in our village every Sunday from June through to end of August. Lots of fresh fruits and veggies to be had there.

  23. I wish we had a local farm shop. But the nearest ones are out on the Gower Peninsula, and hard to reach if you don't drive. At least, we have a large market selling local produce. Happy ABC Wednesday!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ah, yes. Some of us have the opportunity to buy many loacl products. I especially like to do that in the summer when we have more of those choices here. Food Miles labels are a nice tough.

  25. Time we thought about doing the bike maintenance so we can cycle there!

  26. Farm Fresh....sounds delightful. How nice to have something like that close to you. Good photos and choice for the letter F.

  27. Lucky you to have such a place so close by!

  28. Yes! we should all buy from local Farms! help our communities stay solvent!

  29. I didn't even think of food. I wish it wasn't so cold, I really miss the Farmer's Market. Buying fruits and veggies in the winter just isn't the same.

  30. I can't wait till spring and summer so I can get to a farmers market! Such wonderful fresh things there.

  31. Hi everyone and thanks for your positive responses. It seems that local food has struck a chord with many of you. I hope that those of you that don't have a local shop or market get one soon, it's a great way to be part of and help the local community. Though Helena raises a good point that you still need to make sure that the food really IS local.

I'm particularly envious of Mrs Nesbitt and Deemom having their own chooks. Sadly my garden isn't big enough and we're not allowed livestock on the allotment. A friend of mine is going to start keeping bees this year though, so I'm looking forward to the first jar of really local honey :)

  32. For a shop like this in our area we would have to drive miles to get to it, it would take on a good day at least 20 minutes in the car. You wouldn't think I lived in rural West Sussex would you? x

  33. And I thought you'd be able to tell me how wonderful your local shop is Louise ;)
